WILLIAM MAWHINNEY
Heron Dances to the East
|
This
old gray heron lifts
Off
from my margin
Between earth and water.
Weary of standing in
Shallows of heartache,
Tired of fishing,
Adept only at spearing
What
he needed.
Finished, he stretches
White-flecked wings into the air,
Cries out one last time,
And
rises through the
Gate
of grief
To
his nest where
Waits the burning center
Of
his love. |
